The word derives from the Latin Feriae Augusti. had introduced a pagan festival in honor of the Emperor Augustus and lasted the entire month of August to celebrate the harvest of cereals.
Usually these celebrations took place in September, at the end of the summer, but the emperor decided to move in the month that bears his name, in August. The
Feriae Augusti along and across collective rituals and banquets, drinking and sexual excesses, to which all could participate, including slaves and servants. These festivities that reached
their peak on the 15th of the month, were so deeply rooted that the Church decided to Christianize, rather than trying to eradicate them.
Thus, in the sixth century, the Feriae Augusti were absorbed and transformed into the sky in celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary that ended his earthly life, was elevated to the glory of heaven to the soul and body.
Even today in some places the Assumption is celebrated with the traditional religious procession, or the trip out of town.
